"Undaunted, the wight laughed at this. `Yes, and in your true form are shapeless and powerless.'

"Hissing in rage, the demon seized up the staff. `No longer!' it thundered, and sent a blast of power from the staff of Darrow at the wight.

"The warlocks started about in confusion, apparently wanting no part of this. Their entire camp was in an uproar.

"Seizing the opportunity, I quickly stole back to where the others waited.

"`This is perhaps our only chance,' said I. `Let us make haste.'

"Making our way was almost easy, as all eyes and ears were focused on the ensuing battle. We were almost on the road to the gate when their sentries spotted us. They sent a hail of arrows at us, taking one of the remaining soldiers in the eye. We three comrades in arms that remained fell on them in desperation.

"Gart the Renowned was magnificent in battle, hewing goblins like wheat with his battle-axe! The remaining soldier, whose name was Hanik of Brand, was a wind-devil with his great sword. But when we had broken through, he stopped.

"`I shall remain here,' he said, and I saw that he was badly wounded in the leg. `Tell them of Hanik of Brand, and how he made his final stand. Now go!'

"I was loath to abandon such a valiant man, but he was wise to the necessities of battle, and so we left.
