"I don't know what to say," confessed Kathy after some seconds in silence. "My opinion of Dr. Cameron -my high opinion- was based on few but fruitful encounters. And now… Well, I must admit I also misjudged Geneva, so…"

Maybe Mrs. Horwood was exaggerating. In any case, so far she had reasons to trust both her and the doctor. Therefore, left in this quandary, she would try not to be prejudiced against Dr. Cameron, but she would store this new piece of information in her mind, she decided.

Jesse was back, and not in a very good mood. Not even for her sake, as was lately usual in him, could he hide how annoyed and offended he felt.

Mrs. Martin and Geneva had been cold. More than cold - they were distrustful.

"And it wasn't a theatrical attitude to support their covetousness. They were truly wary, and almost angry at me."

"They must really think we don't have a right to this."

"You sound defeated."

"I am defeated! From the moment it turned into a fight!"

Once again Henry's Café was witness to one of their troubled conversations. Or rather Henry, for they usually dined early, before other clients arrived. Kathy wondered why they felt so comfortable discussing private matters in front of a… stranger (for he was), who surely had to hear a great part of what they said, just barely muffled by the TV.

"I must admit this is getting hard for me too," said Jesse.

She didn't expect that. He had been making things so smooth for her that she'd perilously got used to depending on his strength. How could she again, so soon, fall prey to love? Had she not learnt anything? Was she hopelessly dependent?

"Pat needs us," she surprised herself by saying. "We should at least stay for a while for her. Who knows if the Martins will kick her out when they take possession of the place?"

"When?"

Kathy looked at Jesse with an apologetic smile.

"They're making me feel like a thief! Like instead of being a friend to Mrs. Sloan, and she to me, I kind of swindled her. I think I don't even like the island anymore! And that for me is a tragedy. It was my dream to come here since childhood… The setting of my favourite TV series… And now…"

After dessert, Henry's awesome fruit salad, Pat came into the café. She was going towards the bar when she saw them and changed her direction.
