She stared in awe at these people who had known her for life. Stories about neighbors and friends helping one another filtered throughout her house and town as she grew up. Now the gift was bestowed upon her.
Every one offered help in rebuilding and getting the camp up and running. Caitlin kept wiping tears and smiling. This is all it took to remind her of the strength inside her. They would pull together as a family and fight off the intruder who was trying destroy one of their members.
When they left, Caitlin stood outside and looked around. Garrett's arms went around her waist and she leaned into him, resting her head on his chest. "This town is wonderful," she said. "How did we get so lucky to live in a wonderful place like Valley View?"
"Fate smiled on us." They stayed like that a few more minutes and then Garret pulled away. "I hate to ruin this positive mood, but we have to go to the police station."
"Oh," she said as if someone had taken her last breath. Though she needed to know who did it to put it to rest, Caitlin wanted only to move forward.
When they entered the station, the police chief said, "We have Scott MacKay in custody."
Caitlin shook her head. "I want to talk to him," she said, her voice still weak and raspy. She believed he would shed more light on this situation. Would he give her a name? Probably not, she thought, but he may give enough information to move this case forward.
Garrett held her hand and looked deep into her eyes. "I still don't trust him. This may be part of the plan."
"I know, but," Caitlin sighed. "I can't explain it, but I don't believe he did it." Garrett squeezed her hand giving her his blessing.
With a deep breath, she stepped into the interrogation room. Scott sat at the table, his hands clenched together on top of the table and a sad look on his face. "Caitlin," he said, with an eager look to him. "Will you explain what's going on?"
"My house is gone."
"What?" he said, almost in shock.
"Did you do it?" she asked, staring at him, never blinking.
The betrayed look in his eyes sounded in his voice. "No," he said.
"Then who did?" Scott remained silent for a few minutes. When he leaned in he said, "It was," and then he shook his head.
