She turned and stared at Scott; amazed she had let herself fall into this trap. "You make it sound easy to give up my dreams."
"I'm not asking you to give up anything, only to change the players."
"But I love him," she said barely above a whisper.
"I don't care."
"Why are you here?"
"For this." His lips found hers again. Though she wanted to pull away, the seduction of his warm kisses trapped her. His hands caressed her back as she kissed him back. How easy to get swept away in the moment, but Caitlin proved strong and pushed him away.
"I can't do this, Scott." She ran inside and locked the door. She sank to the floor and rested her head on her knees. "What is happening to me? How can I enjoy one man's kisses while another man lingers in my heart?" She exhaled. "Because I don't know what Garrett's kisses feel like."
She turned off the lights, aware that Scott remained on the porch, but to face him again tonight could prove too daunting a task. She wondered if she would ever be able to face either of them again. "Perhaps this is my chance to slink away into the night and return to Richmond." Her heart dropped into her stomach. "Then I lose out on my plans for the ranch." She stomped up the stairs and changed into her pajamas. As she turned out the light she said, "Neither of them will take away my future." She lay in bed, unable to sleep, and wondered about the strange turn of events. Something tensed deep inside and she sensed Garrett's anger and pain. "If Scott stays in Valley View, where does that leave Garrett?"
