Once outside the fresh air overtook her and pushed the sadness away. She and Garrett nestled into the porch swing and gently rocked with the night air. With her knees pulled to her chest, she closed her eyes and listened to the music of the breeze and the owls. It seemed right for Garrett to be here, beside her. For the past week this was how the day had ended, Garrett spending time with her. Their conversations centered on Emmaline and Marshall, but not tonight. Tonight was a time to let the memories fade into the background.

"How does this compare to an evening in Richmond?" Garrett finally asked.

"Let me see. The way the moonlight shines off the parked cars is breathtaking." She slapped him with the pillow. "You've been in the country too long."

"No place would I rather be." They stared as if each had something to say, but where were the words? When they talked about Emmaline and Marshall, the words flowed like an endless waterfall. Any other topic remained tight-lipped. Would it forever stay this way?
