Mizner Park was bustling with after-hours activity as Madeline

searched for a parking spot, noticing the throng of everyday

"supermodels" with artificial cleavage and size-two figures as well as the

impeccably dressed GQ wannabes exuding palpable conceit and

pomposity. While she thoroughly enjoyed hanging out at this Spanishstyle

plaza with its plethora of outdoor cafés, upscale boutiques and

beautiful fountains enhanced by flawless landscape design, she had little

patience for the pretensions of most of its inhabitants.

Though looking pretty stylish herself in an ivory and brown pantsuit

her mother had sent to her, Maddy's insecurities had only intensified since

learning of Ken's engagement. In fact, she was running late now as a

result of agonizing over her appearance for nearly an hour in the

bathroom mirror. After several wardrobe changes, she'd finally decided

on the billowing slacks and coordinating sleeveless blouse that tied in the

back and buttoned down the front in a tasteful, but sexy V-neck.

Despite the oppressive humidity, she'd decided to wear her hair loose

after vigorously brushing it upside down. And doing her Mom proud,

she'd remembered to paint her lips with a lovely shade of rosy gloss,

setting off her artful make-up application. On her ears she wore her big,

gold hoops, opting to forego any other accessories, save for her

grandmother's engagement ring on her right hand. Nanny had left it in

her will for her six year-old namesake, who'd been devastated by her

sudden death 21 years earlier. It was an heirloom of immeasurable

sentimental value, a cherished, white-gold trinket Maddy guarded with

utmost care.

Satisfied with her appearance after one final inspection in the mirror,

she'd grabbed her car keys and her quilted evening bag, and excitedly

headed out the door.
