‘It’s not that simple!’ David shot back. ‘I think we’ve a problem on the inside.’

Lorne was silent for several long moments. ‘You’d better be right about this-’

David handed him a photocopy.

‘Christ! Where did you get this? How did you- ?’

‘I got suspicious when I couldn’t find a phone record of the tip that led us to Archie Skinner’s body. The call came from a call box in the lobby of this station.’

Lorne closed his eyes and cursed under his breath. ‘If we had the barest of up-to-date equipment in this station, at this moment we be checking VTR tape from closed-circuit cameras!’ All resistance to David’s theories gone, he asked, ‘Have you questioned anyone in the front office?’

‘A nondescript man was seen entering the building for the purpose of making a call, a common occurrence. No one got a good look at his face, although there was one guesstimate of his height, at just under six feet.

‘Anyway, you can see why I came directly to you. I don’t know to what degree we’re being interfered with, but it’s a certainty we’re being watched. And if I start digging into Skinner’s professional life. . .’
