‘Get her checked out. I’m going to set up a press conference.’

‘Already? Won’t that do more harm than good?’

Garth smiled grimly. ‘We have no choice but to respond quickly. The gears of procedure and the press are turning, whether we like it or not. Someone out there is shoving our faces in the dirt, so no harm in taking that dirt and using it ourselves to muck up the machinery. Maybe gum things up to our advantage for a change.’

Ever the sceptic, Lorne was as uncertain of this as he was of anything to do with this case.

‘Ah, yes, Ms. Algood,’ Dr. Craven said with a broad smile as he closed his office door, gesturing to a chair at his desk as he seated himself. Lorne took the proffered chair, found it somewhat uncomfortable. Dr. Craven was a thin man with over-large head, thinning black hair and round black-rimmed glasses. ‘What would you like to know?’

‘About her state of mind,’ Lorne told him.

Dr. Craven’s smile only broadened. ‘Sound, if that can be said of a block of wood. Why do you ask?’

‘We’re investigating a homicide,’ Lorne told him, disliking the man’s smiling mask. ‘Ms. Algood is a witness. We are trying to determine her mental fitness, which of course translates into reliability.’
