Relief upon relief, Lorne thought to himself. Just a straightforward job for a change. He decided to begin the interrogation at once. Going to the kitchen he found Ms. Algood sitting at the table drinking coffee, a young female constable hovering nearby in case her charge took it into her head to flee.

Where do we get these nubile babies from? Lorne wondered, taking in the young constable at a glance. Like the girl from Security, she was chestnut-haired, petite and innocent-looking, by all appearances more child than adult. Her name was Donna Blackpool and she was a notorious distraction amongst the younger constables.

‘Ms. Algood,’ Lorne said, seating himself, ‘I am Deputy Chief Inspector Lorne Michaels. I understand you were present when the murder occurred.’

‘I didn’t know he were dead,’ the woman protested.

‘I see. Well, who did?’

‘No one. There were just me.’

Lorne sighed. It seemed the woman was determined to remain obstinate.

‘Did you kill Mr. Skinner?’

‘Of course not!’

‘Did Mr. Skinner kill himself?’

‘Don’t be daft!’

‘Then who killed him?’

‘No one,’ she said sullenly. ‘He were just dead.’
