As in a dream, time flew by quickly for the two couples. Within the space of two years, both young men (and a few friends from their rugby days) were on the force, and within the same two years each had a child and a half: Sarah Marie was born to Richard and Lynn, and Catherine Adele (Katie) was born to David and Monica.

For Lorne Michaels, however, time moved in strange ways. His children were growing up and preparing themselves to leave the roost, except for the youngest, Danny, who was now nine. In that respect, Lorne felt as though his life was flashing before his eyes.

But his case, the Big One, was dragging on interminably. True, there were breaks of a sort, but as the evidence amassed, so too did the risks involved as the nature of the information they were being fed continued to raise the ante.

He well knew that inevitably, somewhere along the line, something must break, that this stalemate couldn’t last forever, and that the possible consequences simply weren’t the risk. He realised too that outside help was needed. At long last, the matter decided in his mind, feeling the sort of relief he hadn’t experienced in years, he couldn’t suppress a smile at the thought of dumping the matter in Security’s lap, allowing someone else to take over the case and all the angst that went along with it. And for the first time in nearly seven years he toyed with the possibility of getting a night’s untroubled sleep.
