Brogan stood thoughtfully, though noticeably avoiding looking in Dorain's direction. But eventually he turned and met her gaze. Watching them, Lily saw that what she had mistakenly assumed was anger was really a mixture of . . . pain? . . . yes, she was certain now... pain, and something else.

But what?

"Ware!" A harsh whisper sent them crouching for cover as they waited for the enemy to show themselves. They waited for so long that Lily began to wonder if anything was coming at all. She could see nothing from her hiding place, and the forest was very still. She had the uncomfortable feeling that if she looked up her companions would be gone. Yet, despite the almost unbearable pressure to do otherwise, she remained where she was.

Finally, the sounds of battle began. But not from the knoll. They were faint at first, and getting unmistakeably closer. Then, it ceased again abruptly. Another sound began to assert itself, that of pounding hooves. In another moment, the elves from the encampment, led by Jerra and Finrain, came flying up the road. Jerra was shouting in the common speech, "It's a trap! Prepare yourselves upon the knoll!"

The elves from the encampment scattered their horses and came bounding up the knoll to join the others. There was no time to ask questions, for the enemy was right behind. And as though it was a trap perfectly set, the enemy came from the other direction came as well.
