Finally, it was the eve of their departure. Belloc had arranged for an escort to take them to Lund, and it was to arrive first thing in the morning. The household had one last meal together, as Burli and Caspar and his sons would be staying behind to watch over Belloc's property while he was gone. Belloc had given his servants some final instructions and much good advice. Then, he joined Lily and Anest who were waiting for him in the upper living-room.

Lily was wearing a peasant dress, and was trying on a pair of riding boots that Burli had made for her. Her fists were knotted in her dress which was hitched up to her lap. Belloc sat down and idly smoked his pipe, watching her pout with a twinkle in his eye.

"They fit, Lily, believe me. You'll just have to get used to them," Anest said, trying to convince her. "Now stand up." She did so, and clomped about, watching her feet with resigned dissatisfaction.

Both Anest and Belloc laughed. "There," said Anest, "now you can ride into town like a lady."

"Not quite," interrupted the wizard. "There's just one small thing that has to be done. Come here, the two of you. Stand here before me."
