Lily’s eyes misted involuntarily. Turning away, strolling slowly, aimlessly through the grass, she said, “You know, if you were to find someone who could release you from this doom, the end would not come for a very long time.”

“Yet it will come.”

Lily looked at her, stung. She gazed long at the grass blowing in the meadow as she so often did, watching the random, ever-changing waves ripple its surface like the distant, unquiet ocean.

“It isn’t fair. There’s only time enough to taste the wonder of life for such a short time. Then, one day, it’s gone forever. For ever.”

Tara gazed at her solemnly. “Do you believe that there is nothing more?”

“Do you?”

Tara too watched the meadow rippling in the breeze. “Maybe we’re like that. A ripple in the breeze. Each one unique. Each one happening only once. Life is sad.”

“Life is sad,” Lily replied. “And life is joyful. And cruel. And generous. It is many things.”

Tara sighed. “It is many things. And it ends.” She was about to say something more when she started in fear. Something very large and black was moving towards them.
