They had arrived at the southernmost edge of the Four Kingdoms, beyond which lay the sea, and a maze of perilous reefs.

It was decided that they would spend the rest of that day and that night in the fortress. That evening, Amrhost was to be found walking listlessly along the battlements, alone. He stopped often to stare at the ocean. At some point, after it became dark, someone's presence prompted him to speak.

"Come to keep an eye on the untrustworthy northerner, have you, Julina." he said without turning around. It was a statement.

"I know not what your intentions are," she told him, "but I promise you that they will not go unmarked. I will prevent you, should you attempt to betray us."

"Betrayal . . ." he muttered, considering. "Yes, to be truthful I have been considering betrayal. Though not, perhaps, in the sense that you mean."

She glared her distrust at him. "Speak plainly! I do not like vagueness in the supposed loyalties of those that serve at arms with us!" She knew he smiled, then, though his back was to her.

"I care nothing for your view of me," he rejoined quietly, "nor am I the least bit concerned that your hand is ready upon the haft of your sword, though I would advise against drawing your weapon."
