"What are you doing?"

"I don't know!"

Just as the Chevy with what John thought were Pennsylvania plates was about to knock off his bumper, it yanked over into the opposite lane and raced up beside them.

"Is this guy nuts?" Tammy asked.

They were side by side now, coming out of the tunnel and into the night again. John saw the barrel of a gun raise between him and the other driver. "Get down!" he yelled. "He's got a gun! There's a gun!"

A deafening shot rang out, bursting John's window, splattering glass everywhere. He threw himself over on Tammy, pushing her head down. The Jeep skidded off to the side of the road in the break down lane. Tires screamed across the pavement and tiny shards of glass flew through the air.

John was able to stop the Jeep before slamming into the guardrail and causing more damage. "You all here?" he quickly asked Tammy. "You hurt anywhere?"

She raked away the knotted hair from her face. "I guess I'm all here. You?"

John looked up ahead at the interstate and was only able to catch the tiny red taillights of the Chevy.

Whoever it was, they were long gone now.
