"Come on," he said softly, looking down into the wide eyes. "We're supposed to be husband and wife. We've got to get more used to each other, or she'll never buy it. Come have a drink. Relax. Let's get to know each other."

She knew he was right. It was something they had to do to be convincing. But she wasn't afraid of getting to know him or of his getting to know her. It was knowing herself that scared her most.

She nodded. "Okay," she said softly, letting him lead her to the kitchen. Her heart was beating as though he were leading her to her doom.
