"Good day, Mrs. Sommers." Maddie entered the room and stood in front of a chair, across from her visitor.

"Miss Hawthorn---I must be straightforward, as I am sure you understand, I have not come to socialize."

Maddie nodded her head, as Mrs. Sommers sat down.

Mrs. Sommers gestured for Maddie to sit.

"I am very comfortable standing, thank you."

"Fine. I will promptly share the intent of my visit. I have great need of Mr. Christman until I can get a replacement."

"When?"

"As soon as possible."

Might I say you do have good timing?"

Mrs. Sommers didn't expect Maddie to sound so cheerful and was speechless.

"We are going to Kingston for a few weeks, and I am sure Mr. Christman will need employment during our absence."

"Perfect."

"I will ask him to speak with you about it."

"Surely you are jesting." Mrs. Sommers tilted her head back and laughed.

"Excuse me."

"There is no need for me to discuss it with him, simply state the fact that he is expected to arrive at my estate first thing in the morning." Mrs. Sommers lowered her head and glared at Maddie from the top of your eyeglass lenses. "I am sure in Mr. Lawrence's absence that you are often called upon to make such a decision. Am I correct?"

"I do not command Mr. Lawrence's servants, but I have asked them for service beyond what has been contracted."

"In your world, to ask is diplomatic. In my world, it is frailty."

"We abide in the same world. The only divisions are those we create."

"I did not come to debate, Miss Hawthorn.." She stood up. "Please understand that it is my intention to employ Mr. Christman upon your departure." She turned to leave the room.

"He will not be released from Mr. Lawrence's commission without his approval and the agreement from Mr. Christman."

Mrs. Sommers spun around quickly and pointed her finger at Maddie. "You would do well not to cross me, Miss Hawthorn. You and I have been civil to one another in the past, and I suggest you remain in that position!"

She raced quickly to the door and slammed it behind her.

Maddie felt a shiver as she sunk down in the chair.

She dreaded their next encounter.
