Peter had a strong feeling they shouldn't hang back either. The footsteps were getting closer and they still had a long way to go. Father's jar was in an alcove at the far end of the building. After an agonising walk, through a maze of rows lined with jars, they got there.

Crispin usually spent time with greetings, telling Father how pleased he was to see him and how mother and Liala regretted they couldn't come and sent their best wishes. There wasn't time for such niceties.

'We need your advice, Father.'

He spoke hurriedly. Peter kept watch as the footsteps drew nearer. When he sank down low and put his head close to the floor, he could see big boots tramping along and guessed that the troll wearing them would be of comparable size. A yellow armband appeared and his worse fears were confirmed.

'Death troll.'

Crispin sped up. He told Father about the two men who had made the passage between realms and how Liala had gone to meet them. Father asked lots of questions about the man who called himself Tom Carter and said he came from the Sixth Realm.

The boots change direction.

Peter tapped Crispin's shoulder.

'The troll has seen us ...'

'Crispin!' Father's voice cut in. 'I must meet this man, Carter. Now, both of you, go at once and don't get caught.'
