"Maybe," Dean answered. "But he seemed surprised to see us."

"He might not have known whose trail out of the tunnel he was sabotaging-just some trespasser in his precious mine."

"Maybe, but he strikes me as a more direct type-not someone who'd pull off a stunt like that."

"We should have asked him if he saw anyone going back down the mountain."

"He wasn't in a mood to chat."

As they reached the Jeep, Cynthia turned to her husband. "Whoever did that-changed our markings out of the mine-do you think they were trying to kill us?"

"Either that or scare us badly. If scaring us was the case, they certainly were successful. I'm glad that's all behind us." The words weren't out of his mouth before he realized how wrong they were. As he glanced down at his vehicle, he saw both tires on the driver's side were totally flat.
