Suddenly he flicked off the flashlight, plunging them into utter darkness as she stumbled against him. For a moment her heart leapt, fearful their light had died permanently, trapping them in this awful place. Then he laughed at her cry and flicked it back on.

"Give me the damn light!" she shrieked, her anger overcoming her fear as she grabbed for the flashlight. "I'm going back. I don't care. This is dumb! And you'd better come too or you'll never find your way out of this hole. I'm not kidding!"

He held the light away from her, but the burst of outrage had startled him. "Just a little bit further," he mumbled as he turned. "I promise."

Caleb began to hurry, and in her haste to keep up with the halo in front of him, she stumbled, falling to her knees and rolling to her side in the wet mud. She cried out as he turned yet another corner and his fading yellow light receded into darkness. She called out, louder and more frantically this time, her voice echoing against the rock.

"Caleb! Caleb, damn you!" She floundered to a sitting position, then her feet, cringing as she struggled upright, the sting in her wounded knees bringing tears to her eyes. With an outstretched hand she touched the wall and managed to feel her way around the corner until she could see the weak glow of the near-extinguished light far ahead. Caleb knelt in a grotto of the tunnel, and at first she thought he had fallen, too.

"Caleb?" She hobbled up behind where he knelt. The dying flicker danced and radiated in his shaking hand, reflecting on something white. As she looked over his shoulder, she caught her breath in a muffled scream. The skull looked up through hollow eyes, just as the flashlight died, plunging the pair into a blackened void of darkness.
