Alex smiled as she continued to the water’s edge, sandals dangling from one finger. Jenny dashed passed her. A wave broke onto the beach, covering her little body midway.

“Cold!” she squealed and ran after the retreating wave.

“You know the rules.” Her mother shouted after her.

Stopping, she looked back. “I’ll be careful,” she promised and moved back a little.

That could have been me at that age; she thought and stopped just beyond the water’s edge. Breathing deep, the scent of salt mixed with crisp, clean earth after a rainstorm filled her lungs. Freedom should smell like this. Closing her eyes, she tilted her face to the sun. Rays warmed her skin. No rules. The ocean’s waves whispered to her soul. Wish I could stay here forever.

Icy water washed over her feet. Gasping, her eyes flew open as it rose, soaking the hem of her dress. Her skin stung. Shivering a little, she reversed until dry, warm sand covered her feet. Sat down and watched the waves roll and retreat for a little while.

Her legs warmed slowly as the sun’s rays stroked her skin gently. Nice and warm. Just the way I like it. Sighing, she let herself soak up the sun’s heat. Her brow furrowed. Why do mother and father hate the sun? She wondered. Even the guards will avoid it if they had a choice. Xander what is happening to you? You used to adore the sun. Since you met Diane, you have changed.
