Alex gasped. “I do work!”

“You call that thing... you’re doing, work?”

“That thing you are referring to mother is called day trading!” Her shoulders squared. “It takes skill...”

“Oh, come darling.” Her mother laughed. “Men are investors, not women.”

Frowning, she said, “In recent years, many women have chosen this line of work.” Her mother’s face scrunched up. “Let’s face facts. Beauty products and I aren’t a good match.” She switched to straight talk. “I know how to use tweezers, but wax...” Shivering. “Mother, did you forget what happened?” Maria shook her head. “I nearly broke Carlotta's jaw when she ripped it off my top lip.”

Maria frowned. “I will let it go for now, but I am not giving up.”

“Mother, I like what I am doing.”

“It’s not good to coop yourself up in your room.”

“It’s safe and keeps father out of my hair.”

“Alexandra...”

“Mother, please.”

Sadness filled her as she looked at her beautiful daughter. “You have so much potential, if you only let me help you.” Alex crossed her arms. “Fine! I will let you have your breakfast in peace,” she said and switched her planner on again.
