"No one needs me today." Heaviness surrounded her heart causing her shoulders to sink. "I'm more of a nuisance this summer. The kids want to explore the ranch and the surroundings, but not on horseback. We spend time each day with the horses, but I see the look in their eyes when Charlie offers to take them on a hike or fishing. When Faith comes and says, "Let's explore the mountains,' they flock to her. How do I compete with people who are naturals with kids? How do I compete with this place?"

"Why stay?"

Her sideways glance showed amazement by his question. "I love it here. This is where I belong." In speaking the words, the pain eased. Did it matter who taught the kids or who took them exploring? Happiness, fun, and safety remained top priorities. If spectator was on her job duties list this summer, she would do it with an open heart.

Curiosity shone in his eyes, as if he had hundreds of questions to ask. The surroundings began looking like terra cotta. Colby stood keeping his gaze on the stream. Megan pulled on her socks and boots, and then took his outstretched hand. A tingling sensation radiated throughout her arm when their hands met. Neither spoke as they stared deep into each other's eyes.

She bit her lip to hide her tremulous smile. Something about this man touched her soul without speaking a word. How does this exist in today's world? Why do I feel the need to question everything? What is he thinking and feeling? His dark eyes remained like the night sky, vast, and filled with many secrets.

When he brushed a wisp of hair from her cheek, Megan's insides flipped. He leaned in, but stopped. Dropping her hand, Colby ran, and never looked back. Unable to move, she watched him disappear among the trees. "Wow. Is this how Christa feels when Mike smiles at her or when they danced?"

A dark orange color now surrounded her. "Life's good," she said, atop Misty. "Before summer's end I will have Gray Cloud and Colby talking. There may be a bonus for me-a boyfriend."

Riding into the ranch, she saw Brett pacing. "Here we go again," she said, kicking Misty, urging her forward.

"Where have you been?" he yelled, grabbing the reins. The veins on his neck were bulging.

"Riding."

"How about a lover's rendezvous?" He removed his Stetson, showing the icy daggers in his silvery-blue eyes.

Megan took a deep breath. "Brett, let's not replay last summer. I don't have a boyfriend, therefore how could I participate in a lover's rendezvous?"
