He heard Candee puttering around in the kitchen, and just as he was thinking, how natural and happy that sound made him, she came up behind him reaching over his shoulder, while placing a mug of steaming cocoa on his desk, while at the same time planting a kiss on his cheek
How his life had changed since the night they met on the Internet, there would always be bad people doing bad things, even on the Internet, but it was his job to clean it up, and he was dedicated to doing exactly that.
Monday morning Starke was up early, he dressed, kissed Candee while she slept and left a note on the kitchen counter, was off making the rounds of the places he needed to go, to alert the proper authorities and get them on this case, because in all likelihood these guys were going to get careless and mistake a human for an animal then they would have a murder case on their hands as well. He had taken a walk around his property and had seen beer cans tossed around which had not been there prior to this incident and if there's one thing he learned being on the force is alcohol and guns, like driving and alcohol don't mix.
Then he swung by his property, and saw that a crew was on the job, so he went on into the station, to fill the guys in on what had happened only to find, Cam had done a good job of that by the time he got there, and had ask a couple of them to investigate, and they were already checking to see who in the area had applied for hunting licenses, recently and that was a good start.
This was one of the best run station's in the state, anyone of them would tell you it ran like a well oiled machine, mostly because they were a brotherhood unto themselves, and had a wall full of commendations to prove it. He sat down at his desk and got to work himself, he had some updating to do and a few reports to be filed, there was still some paper work that went along with the job, but thankfully most of it was on computers now.
He looked over at Cameron, who was on the phone but laughing, it must be Julie, he thought? Then Cam held up a note to Starke he had been writing, in big letters all it said was "PHONE SEX." Starke cracked up and just shook his head and waved him off. He and Julie were such an inspiration to him, to aspire to have a marriage like that one once again, his marriage to Marie was wonderful but way to short and much too sad.
