Marysville was his reality. He knew who accepted him there, and those who rejected him, he could avoid. When he was among those unfamiliar with him, he expected nothing but rejection, so rejection was perceived from everyone with whom he came into contact. Like Christian Grey, Harry had a rough start in life which he would strive to overcome through the years, to no avail. That which he construed as love was control, and a controlling love was the kind of love he was capable of giving, no more, no less.

I remember a teacher once telling me that Harry had just about ruined my reputation. I stared at her in disbelief. I assumed she was talking about sex, as she was one who judged most young couples in our school, but rumors about how far I had or had not gone with Harry were the least of my concerns. I was fighting for my life, struggling with great turmoil in my young life, and trying to stay alive. Inside I was screaming, “Don’t you know how afraid I am? Can’t you see the fear on my face?” But I said nothing. I didn’t dare. There were eyes everywhere in our little town, watching and waiting, and all too willing to report back to my Christian Grey. The punishment was too great for me to take foolish chances.
