"NO!" She screamed. Now they would surely take her to jail and Barrett would get no help. She slammed on the brakes and stopped, reaching for the cell phone. In a near state of panic, she studied it. She didn't have a clue how to use it. She punched in 911, hoping it would work. It didn't.

Someone tapped on the window and she looked up to see Officer Ryan. She didn't think her mood could get any worse, but the sight of him did the job. This was the mean cop.

She looked down at the phone. "How does this work?"

The tapping was louder and when she looked up again, both officers were there. She rolled the window down again, this time turning her plea on Officer Ryan. What could it hurt?

"Please! This is an emergency. Some men have captured my brother and Mr. Monroe on our land. I'm afraid they may kill them because I think we interrupted a drug deal."

Officer Ryan opened the door. "Come with me."

"Please, I'll go to jail, but first we need to help them!"

He nodded. "All right. Show me where they are."

It was probably a trick to get her out of the car, but they could have used their guns to do that. She opened the door and stepped out. Immediately Officer Lucas grabbed her arm and started to pull her toward his car.

She looked back at the older officer. "Please help them. I don't care what you do to me, but help them!"

"She's going with me, Officer Ryan said."

Officer Lucas frowned. "She resisted arrest and she's driving without a license. She concocted this story to…"

Officer Ryan interrupted him. "She is coming with me," he said forcefully.

Officer Lucas reluctantly released her arm. "She's my arrest."

"That's fine. If her story doesn't pan out, you can take her in with my blessing, but right now she's coming with me."

Mary Jo fought back tears as she followed him to his car. He opened the door for her and looked at Officer Lucas over his car. "Impound that vehicle if you want something to do."

"Don't you think you might need my help?"

"No. Just take the car in."

Why wouldn't he accept help? She was starting to get a bad feeling again. He pulled his car past Barrett's and the other patrol car and started back the way they came. This was the shortest route.
