He caught her by the waist and hauled her to him for one last hungry kiss. They walked back to their campfire that burned low. The drive back home was in silence. They were painfully aware of each other’s nearness and of what awaited them once they arrived.

CHAPTER TEN

Angie placed the cellphone to her ear the tenth time in the last hour. Ricky was obviously ignoring her calls. She walked across the thick carpet and stopped behind Jerome. He took the phone from her hand and hung it up.

“Maybe he doesn’t want to be bothered.” He rubbed Angie’s shoulders and pressed his thumbs into the base of her skull. “You look tensed.”

Angie sighed and lazed her head to one side, leaving her neck exposed. Her hair brushed across his knuckles and her scent filled his nose.

“I can’t stand him paying attention to Flora. This was a scam not a romantic story.” She said. “He will ruin everything.”

“He already did.”

“You don’t understand, he always do his job right. Something is wrong here.” Angie remembered how Ricky had proposed to her before the funeral. He looked so in love and she received the impression that he would never screw up.

“He is a grown man, he can make his own decisions.” He slid his hands to her waist and pulled her closer. He wanted to touch her like a lover but her mind was focused on Ricky. He’d found pleasure in her bed on several occasions but was getting tired of her immersion in Ricky’s business.
