She lifted her brows. "Do you think they'd let us share a cell?"

He laughed. "What do you people do around here for entertainment?"

She batted her eyes at him and remained pointedly silent. Finally she sighed. "Sometimes we listen to music - live music. When I was younger, we used to go roller skating." She glanced at his leg. "Not a good idea, I think."

He gave her a wry smile. "Surely you haven't forgotten that I have enough trouble staying upright when I don't have ball bearings under both feet." He slowed the car as they approached a dirt road. "What's up that way?"

"Nothing but open fields and forests - maybe a few cows."

He turned on the road. "Good. Sounds like an ideal place to talk privately."

She looked in the back seat. "There's someone listening now?"

He grinned. "Well, no, but it seems like everywhere we go, someone finds us, doesn't it? Besides, some of us use our hands a lot when we're talking. It isn't safe to do that and drive at the same time."

He drove down the road a little way until he found a place to pull to the side. He shut the lights off and opened his door. "Let's listen to the night sounds together."

They both got out of the car and he took her hand as they walked away from the car. He took a deep breath. "I love this time of the year."

She shivered. "It's kind of chilly."

He released her hand and put an arm around her shoulders. "Snuggle close to me and I'll keep you warm."

He didn't need to say it twice. She snuggled against his warm chest, delighting in the feel of his muscles. When his arms drew her closer, she sighed in contentment. "This is nice."

He kissed her forehead. "I love you."

She lifted her head, searching his face in the dark. Did he feel the need to say it when he wasn't being prompted? "I love you too."

For a while they simply stood there in each other's arms, listening to the night sounds. It was peaceful and satisfying in a way she had never known. Was he her soul mate? Had they been destined to meet and fall in love?

Since the day they met, every moment spent with him had been exciting - not always in a romantic way, but exciting, all the same. A couple months ago life looked like it had no promise. A person never knew what lay ahead. The only thing they could do was treasure the moment.
