CHAPTER 8

Logan leaned back in his recliner. "I don't know, Barr. It was dangerous enough to send you out the first time, but this is different. Now they know you are connected with the Spencers and your comment about the land belonging to them suggests you have an idea they may be up to something illegal."

Barrett handed him a drink and sat down on the edge of the couch. He suspected the use of his nickname was Logan's way of reminding him that they were friends, not business partners. "I agree that they will connect me with the Spencers, but I didn't say anything about him doing anything illegal - just that continuing in that direction was a dead end unless he was going to trespass."

Logan took the glass and chuckled. "This isn't an English class or a court of law. It doesn't matter what you said. What matters is how he likely took it." He took a sip of the liquid. "In any case, we aren't trying to bust a drug ring. We're trying to determine if my client's son had an accident or if he was murdered."

"I know, but drugs may have been the reason. Mary Jo and her mother are certainly frightened of them and I overheard them discussing the fact that Jim Bob had been involved with them."

"Lots of people are involved in drugs. That doesn't mean they committed murder. You ran off the road. Maybe he did too."

"He accosted her on a public road in broad daylight. I'm concerned about what might happen next."

Logan nodded. "I'm sure you're on target about that, but essentially, your cover has been blown. If you go back there, you will be a sitting duck."

Uncle Del sipped on his drink, his troubled gaze fixed on Barrett. "If he goes in there logging like he suggested, wouldn't that throw them off? I mean, wouldn't they figure he was just trying to protect his interest?"

Logan nodded again. "Probably, but that still puts him in a dangerous situation. It might also hamper the investigation. They'd be more alert - might even avoid the area for a while." He sipped his drink, his expression becoming reflective. Finally he looked at Uncle Del. "On the other hand, it might make them move up their plans if they got wind that you were going to be in there logging." He set his drink on a coaster and looked at Barrett. "I'm concerned that, in case of an emergency, you wouldn't have any way of requesting help."
