Tears collected on her lids. "Yes."

He held her tightly and stroked her hair. "I am so sorry." The rage and hatred she showed that night made perfect sense now. He would not ask her to talk about Emily's death. He understood the pain it would bring. They sat in silence.

Once Elisabeth had composed herself, she asked, "What else do you want to know?"

Jackson kissed her forehead. "Does anyone in your family know about me?"

"Just my mother."

"How did she take it?"

"Not well, though she's starting to come around. She knows I have never been happier. She paused, collecting her thoughts. "If I can convince her to accept us, she will know how to deal with my father. My brother is a wild card. I can't begin to predict how he will handle it."

"So, it sounds like the key to our happiness lies with Miriam Sidwell." He focused straight ahead, painful memories bombarding him. "I don't want you to choose between me and your family."

"That is something you have no control over. I have already made my choice. My family and my pack will have to make theirs."
