Chapter 197: Between Life and Death

The sword flashed past, instantly slicing the large rat’s body into two. Another three big rats pounced at Zhang Xiao Qiang simultaneously. Zhang Xiao Qiang aimed the Beast Horn Spear in his left hand towards one of the rat’s head and the sharp point of the spear pierced in like slicing tofu. Applying some downward force, the rat slid from the tip of the Spear and hung on the pole. Following a swing, the rat’s corpse was flung to the ground. Using the Jing Wei Blade, he hacked down at the other two rats, and right when it was about to strike the rats.

“PA PA….”

Two gunshots were released. The rats flew backward due to the immense force, causing the Jing Wei Blade to hit nothing. “Mo-…..ther, this damned woman….” Zhang Xiao Qiang cursed at Shangguan Qiao Yun in his heart, she was constantly putting a stop to his limelight, preventing him from enjoying every time he fought. Did I owe her in our past life or something?

Shangguan Qiao Yun’s gunshots were like a signal as it got the people at the top of the watchtower to start firing. Countless bullets converged towards Zhang Xiao Qiang like a wall of fire that ripped all the rats to shreds. Zhang Xiao Qiang obtained the time to evaluate the situation, not many rats managed to enter within the walls with maybe up to a 100. These rats were extremely deformed, their front two legs were perfectly proportionate to their current bodies, but their hind legs were far more muscular and bigger than its entire body, causing them to look like they were in constant prowling positions. Zhang Xiao Qiang was sure that if they were able to stand straight, they would look like they came from Australia.

Over at the steel doors, Guo Fei was high on killing the rats. Every time his blade swung or danced, rats would either be beheaded or sliced in half. The rats were constantly jumping into his blades. As for those sprawled across the floor, he would stomp on them. In actual fact, his speed was only a thread faster than the rats, but it was because of this marginal difference that made it seem as though the rats was facing against its natural enemy, an insurmountable natural enemy.

With the guns above and Guo Fei at the opposite side, Zhang Xiao Qiang started to idle. Although a 100 rats were not little, they could not sustain against the massacre. When Guo Fei hacked the last remaining rat, he looked around with his bloodthirsty eyes, looking for any remaining monsters. The entire place looked as though it had been baptized by blood with various rat corpses lying everywhere. Just as Zhang Xiao Qiang sighed with relief, he heard Three crying out from above. Following that, the Garand Rifles and Type-81 ARs started to fire again.

Countless of bullets struck the top of the wall, inciting cement dregs to fall. Small holes formed at the upper surface of the wall. One dead rat fell from the top to the ground, its entire dark red fur gradually turned bright red. Following the continuous firing from the watchtower, more and more rat corpses fell. Zhang Xiao Qiang then realized that the rats had started climbing the perimeter walls.

Endless swarms of triangular head rats appeared at the top of the wall before they could even complete their climb, they would be shot. There were already many corpses inside the perimeter wall, but there were even more corpses that fell outside. Even so, the rats continued to appear. When Zhang Xiao Qiang heard the cease-fires from above, his heart instantly tensed up. They had not opened the ammunition dumps and the bullets they found and had added together were less than 2000. According to the speed that they were firing at, the bullets they had would be depleted, without the suppressive fire from the automatic rifles, how could they simply rely on the rifles to defend against the rats?

Zhang Xiao Qiang climbed the watchtower very quickly and threw a few of his own magazines to Three, then pulled a team member using his Garand Rifle to fire away aside and looked towards the wall. It was difficult to evaluate the situation from below, but at the top, Zhang Xiao Qiang was able to see clearly, and only then realized the severity of the situation, the number of rats outside the wall had slowly formed into a mountain.

The dense amount of rats squeezed together squirmed slowly, countless of them wished to climb the wall while countless of them wanted to climb to the top of the rat mountain. Although the gun fires had not ceased, the mountain of rats kept growing higher, the bullets were able to draw blood from the rats, but these bullets were considered drops inside the ocean of rats. Regardless of how many rats were killed, their corpses would still form a part of the mountain and become stepping stones for the other rats.

Zhang Xiao Qiang cursed under his breath and ran down the steps again, he rushed to the bottom of the wall where the rat corpses fell endlessly and took a grenade from his waist, pulled its safety pin, and threw it across to the other side of the wall. He did not count the seconds or had time to wait for the grenade to explode and threw out another one as insurance when suddenly…

“BOOM”

A loud explosion caused the sky above Zhang Xiao Qiang to darken immediately. He looked up, squealed and immediately turned to run.

Countless of charred rat corpses, countless of half-dead rats and countless of limbs were thrown into the sky from the power of the grenade. All of these formed an unprecedented cloud that instantly rained down.

Although Zhang Xiao Qiang was giving his all to run, the endless rain of rat corpses still fell on him without fail. While sprinting, he swung himself left to right in attempts to throw off the disgusting body parts. Only when Zhang Xiao Qiang returned to the watchtower did he realize that everyone else had hidden within, even Guo Fei, who seemed unafraid of the Heavens or anything and sought to die was actually hiding inside the watchtower.

Zhang Xiao Qiang only climbed to the top to inspect the result of the grenades after the rain of body parts ended. The other members left the watchtower and combed the courtyard to finish off the remaining rats that were only stunned by the grenade. The stairs that led to the top of the watchtower was completely covered with rat corpses and body parts. Zhang Xiao Qiang had to endure stepping on them and resist the urge to vomit to reach the top.

The top was also filled with dead rats, blood splatters and body parts. Zhang Xiao Qiang trampled onto a just awoken rat, then looked towards the wall. The mountain of rats outside the wall had been reduced by a great level, but the rats at the bottom were still converging at the same place and slowly forming a brand new rat mountain. Once again, Zhang Xiao Qiang sighed, then turned and headed down the watchtower.

Zhang Xiao Qiang started his third sprint. Following the third explosion, Zhang Xiao Qiang no longer bothered to look at the formation of another cloud of rats. He trampled over the rat corpses and ran towards the watchtower when new body parts started to descend.

He only stopped to catch his breath after entering the watchtower. He watched the rain of rats fall outside and turned to look at Three. Three revealed a bitter look, then used a plank and covered his head before climbing up the watchtower.

Zhang Xiao Qiang looked at his bloodstained clothes and shook his head. He removed his gloves, took out a cigarette, lit it up and waited. Halfway through the cigarette, Three came down. He looked at Zhang Xiao Qiang and shook his head. A burst of agitation rose in Zhang Xiao Qiang’s heart, he flicked the cigarette on the ground and smeared it out with his feet.

He wore the bloodstained gloves once again, wielded the Beast Horn Spear and walked out. Outside of the ammunition dump door, a sea of rat corpses laid all over, while the green steel door had been dyed blood red. Zhang Xiao Qiang used the Beast Horn Spear and prod at the last lock…..No one knew how the lock was made, but Zhang Xiao Qiang began his persistent destruction of the locks. One lock took him about 10 minutes, but the rats outside the wall did not give him the time. The subordinates stationed at the top of the watchtower warned them of the incoming tide, and gun fires started up again.

Zhang Xiao Qiang turned and looked back, dead rats were dropping down from the wall again. He increased the strength in his hands and started to move his Beast Horn Spear at a quicker pace. Perspiration trickled down his forehead, from one to two drops to an endless stream of perspiration.
