Whisper In The Wind
Page 62"When did this happen?"
"In the middle of the night."
"What time?"
"I don't know. I was asleep."
"Dammit."
She cautiously touched his arm, which was as hard as steel. "Scott, please tell what is happening?" She looked deep into his eyes, trying to find the answers he kept buried deep inside. "Scott, I know you work for someone. You came here on a mission, but something happened to make you change your plans. What? You can talk to me."
"Answer me this, why a ranch for kids?"
"Because this place needs laughter and it has much to teach kids about nature, horses, and how to have fun. I can taste the toasted marshmallows, hear the cowboy songs, and hear fish sizzling in the cast iron skillet. This ranch will live again."
"There's no stopping you, is there?" A glimpse of pride sounded in his voice.
"No. Remember," she said, now smiling, "I am a Chadwick."
He moved away. "I want you to have your dreams, but I can't stop this. Believe me, I have tried."
"Who is it? Let me help."
"No." His dark eyebrows slanted in a frown.
Caitlin exhaled. Against her better judgment she spoke the words. "Set up the meeting."
"You don't understand," he said, grabbing her arms. "This isn't your grandfather were talking about or dealing with. Do you believe you can handle ruthless and conniving businessmen?"
"I don't know, but I have to try before something else happens." The determination in her voice and stance changed his mood.
Scott shook his head and let go of her arms. "I'm crazy for doing this, but okay. We'll do this your way." He placed the call. "Okay..Yes…No.. Fine, I'll tell her." When he closed the phone he said, "Monday morning, here." He took her hand, this time in a gentle manner. "Are you sure?"
"No," she said exasperated, "but I have to save what is mine." There was a moment of awkward silence. "Will you be here?"
"No, but promise me Winston will be."
"That's a promise I will make and keep."
