Page 129"Okay." They shook hands and then went separate ways. One dilemma solved, but something seemed amiss, and it did not involve mentioning the new work proposal to Garrett.
Caitlin continued strolling down Main Street when she happened upon the feed store window. A photograph in the window stopped her. "That man is granddaddy, but who is the man with him?" She went inside, the bell on the door clanking.
"Hello lass. What brings you in today?" Mr. Sinclair leaned the broom against the counter.
"I am interested in the photograph in the window. Who's that man with granddaddy?"
His crooked smile wound its path to her as he said, "Don't you recognize him, lass-he's your daddy." He squeezed her shoulder and then took the picture from the window. "This is an early wedding present."
"Thank you," she whispered. Never had a gift left her so touched that she could not speak. The faint memories of riding a horse with her dad on one side and her granddaddy on the other sparked tears of joy. "I had forgotten you, Daddy." She sniffled, dried her cheeks with the back of her hand, and took a deep breath.
"Thank you, again," and she raced outside. Only one place called to her and she jumped in her car and drove out of town.
She purposely parked near the main house because she wanted to watch him. Tranquility surrounded him like an aura and lit his face. During the next few minutes, Caitlin wondered about his dreams and plans. Lately she had learned about her parents and grandparents, and though Garrett had been in their lives forever, she knew little about him. He looked up, but did not move. When she tilted her head and smiled, he ran towards her, scooping her into his arms. "I am glad to see you."
"Me too," she said, and then kissed him with a longing she had not sensed earlier.
"What's wrong?" he asked, setting her down.
"I hired Scott MacKay to help oversee the ranch," she said in one breath.
"Okay," he said neither happy nor angry. His lack of emotion bothered her. "What?" he said, almost laughing. "I may never completely trust the guy, but he did help you. We'll see what happens. Now, tell me what's really bothering you."
