Whisper In The Wind

Scott marched her onto the porch and held onto her elbow while he rang the doorbell. She squirmed, trying to break free, but his grip remained steadfast. Garrett opened the door and she waited for them to burst into flames from his searing look. "Come in," he said.

The door was not closed before Scott said, "Winston, you need to talk sense into this woman. She wants a meeting with my step dad."

"First, I have no idea what you're talking about and second, Caitlin, are you crazy?" She stepped away and stared at the floor for a moment. Again, his voice and mannerisms reminded her of a father scolding a child. No more, she told herself and she looked him square in the face.

"I need this to be over." They explained the situation and then Caitlin said, "Scott has tried and is getting nowhere. Granddaddy never backed down from a fight and I'm not going to start now. Forrester took a respite while Granddaddy was alive, but now he's back and with a vengeance. I can't live my life looking over my shoulder."

Scott smiled at her to which she raised herself a few inches. Her heart filled with pride and satisfaction.

"Okay," Garrett said, putting his hands up in defeat. "It's against my better judgment, but I know better than to argue with women's logic."

"Amen to that," Scott said.

"But, Caitlin," Garrett said.

"I know," she said resting her hand on his arm and looking him directly in the eyes. "I'll be careful. I'll be fine."

"I'm going with you," Garrett said.

"No," Scott said, stepping closer. "It's better for all, if I go with her."

A cold knot formed in her stomach as she awaited Garrett's response. He was not one to sit idly by and wait for things to happen, but in this case she knew it was the best for all of them. What would he say? He continued to look between the two, his gaze lengthening on Caitlin and when he finally smiled she relaxed.

"Okay," he said and the two men shook hands. For the first time since her granddaddy's funeral, Caitlin believed all would turn out fine. It would actually turn out better than she expected.
