Whisper In The Wind

"Why keep me in the dark all these years?" Caitlin asked.

"Because I feared I was bad luck. If anything happened to you before you set about achieving your dreams, well, I couldn't have lived with that." Rachel wiped her green eyes with the lace-edged handkerchief. "Now, I have a huge favor to ask."

"Okay."

"What would you think if I turned my home into a bed and breakfast? I love people and I love to cook. We don't have a hotel except for the Junction, and well you know."

Caitlin nodded, having seen the place first hand. She giggled remembering Garrett's shocked look when she told him she had gone there to talk with Scott. It only took one time of going to realize she never wanted to return. It was a place for cowboys and lonely travelers. Growing up, no one ever mentioned the place, let alone go there. Then Scott Mackay showed up and all the rules were tossed out.

She surveyed the room and considered the rest of the house with its four bedrooms. With it situated in the center of downtown, what better place for a young couple or a retired couple to stay. "Go for it, but it means changing things."

"I know." Rachel looked around the room and nodded. "It's time. Quite frankly, I'm tired of this outdated furniture. We never liked it, but it was what we could afford."

"Where do we start?" Caitlin said, sitting on the edge of her seat.

"Whoa now. We'll start in the morning." Rachel finished her tea and then stared at the young woman sitting beside her. A new sparkle shone in her eyes and a lifting of her spirits was shone in the laugh lines around her eyes. "Thank you, Caitlin."

"You are very welcome, but what did I do?"

"You listened and did not ask questions." She dabbed at the corner of her eye with the lace handkerchief. "Now, get your rear end over to Garrett's. When you danced under the stars, did you not feel magic?"

"You read too many romance novels." Caitlin glanced at the stack of books that lay on the end table beside the easy chair.

"I do not," she said sliding her latest romance novel under the newspaper. "I know true love when I see it. Go get that man of yours. Be sure and tell him, if he gives you any grief, your grandma will whoop his butt."
