The Bairn of Brianag
Page 13_________________________
Since the Harvest ball at Brianag last fall the wet winter weather had hampered our travels; I had visited Cathy only twice at Grant's Hill, and our visits to Brianag had been nearly as rare; though much closer to Gillean, the roads had been nearly impassable at times. Fortunately Shannon's Loch, where our friend August O'Reilly lived, was much closer, and the road good; we two visited at least once a week.
But now that spring was here and everyone was busy planting, no one was visiting.
Robbie had not come to Gillean, and we had not gone to Brianag. I had not seen him for nearly a month. My heart beat swiftly as I changed into my habit; my cheeks were flushed. I hurried down the stairs, almost giddy with anticipation. My father lifted me into my saddle, and we were off.
The ride to Brianag was pleasant. We all exclaimed at the spring flowers which had appeared recently; the sky was clear and the sun warm. As Brianag came into view, my heart was flooded with well-being. They saw us coming up the drive; Mr. and Mrs. Randall were on the porch to meet us.
"Maclaines!" said Mr. Randall. "What a delightful surprise!"
We all dismounted at the steps, exchanging greetings. I tried not to look around for Robbie; and my heart stopped when I heard his voice from the hallway.
"Maclaines! How good it is to see you, upon my word!"
He came down the steps and swept me into his arms. "Jessie! How lovely you look this fine day! I declare you are prettier every time I see you, lass!"
I laughed up into his face, my heart bounding with joy. "Robbie, put me down, do!
I'm not a child anymore, you know!"
He set me on my feet and took my hands. "So I see. You have grown into quite a lady, have you not? The long winter has changed you! And still, no one has asked for your hand?
What is wrong with the men in this district? Have your parents been keeping you a secret?"
"We have all been hidden these past months," said Kevin, laughing. "Hibernating, like bears!"
Robbie turned and took Kevin's hand. "Indeed! It's been too long since we have had a contest. What shall it be today? Fencing? Racing?"
"I think fencing!" said Kevin.
"I have been practicing!" Robbie said. "My uncle insists upon it. Come. Let us go inside and get the swords. I shall best you today, Kevin Maclaine!"
