"What else is there to tell? You were born and my sister died."

"What did you do after she had passed away?"

"I wasn't with her when she died."

"But you said---"

"Do not make me feel guilty for not being there to say good-bye. I had my son to care for." Mrs. Sommers jumped to her feet and turned angrily to Hayley. "Why did you have to come here and stir up this memory?"

"Did you hold me after I was born?"

"I don't remember. Austin was a child and I needed to attend to my own."

"What is the doctor's name?"

"What does it matter? He's been dead a long time, now."

Hayley stood. "Thank you for your time." She walked slowly to the door.

"I do not know what you are looking for, but I think it's time you grow up and realize that you can't bring your mother back by talking about her."

"You are right, Mrs. Sommers." Hayley smiled. "Thank you for speaking with me." She quietly left the room as Mrs. Sommers stood staring.

"Father, please let me go to the Kingston with you tomorrow."

"Hayley, what business do you have there?"

"I want to revisit the library."

"I will bring back any book you request."

"But I do not know which ones I want to read until I visit the library."

"I am sure the librarian will have some wonderful suggestions." Maddie interjected.

Hayley shot her an unwelcome glance.

Father, please, the travel would do me good. This house is so stuffy, I can barely breathe."

"Sounds like you may need a doctor."

"I am serious. Please let me come."

"I suppose it would be alright if Maddie does not need you here."

Hayley glance was now pleading.

"I suppose, I could go along to keep you company?"

Maddie offered.

"I do not need a nanny."

"I was thinking that you might need a friend."

"I wouldn't want to take you away from your professional duties."

"Well, I suppose if you think you will be fine on your own..." Her father relented.

Hayley jumped. "Oh, thank you Father!" She gave him a strong hug. "I love you so much!" Hayley spun around quickly and raced to her room. " I have a few things to pack."
