Dark Moon Rising

Jumping to her feet, she blurted before thinking, “Is this about the Dark Moon Rising?”

His mouth dropped open. “How do you...?”

An angry smile appeared. “Father, little goes on in this house that I am not aware of.” Her right foot tapped while she waited expectantly. “Well?” she asked when he didn’t answer her question.

She outwitted me! He realised shocked. “Yes,” he admitted in defeat.

Silence settled and cut into them as they glared at each other. Tension vibrated through the room like thick oil oozing out of the ocean bed.

He stood up and went to stand in front of the glass-panelled wall. How do I keep you alive when you fight me at every turn? he thought frustrated. His eyes drifted over pine treetops down to the sea below.

“So,” she began uncertain, “what’s up with this moon thing?”

He cringed inside at the memories her question conjured. You can never know about the events of almost 20 years ago. I did everything in my power to ensure your safety, even suppressed your memories to shield you from the past, but still it’s not enough. I’m sorry my child. I wish I could share my burdens with you.Closing his eyes, he hardened his heart. I have to be cruel, to be kind.He reminded himself. The prophecy must not be fulfilled.
