And You Will Find Love

Page 286

Not five minutes out onto the road for Austria, Barbara looked out the back of the truck she rode in with Becky. She saw what she was sure was the same Soviet truck and armored car she and Stephen had seen the day before. The Ruskies that had been searching for the Lipizzaner foal saw her with it in the truck and shook their heads in despair. Smiling, she waved good-bye to them, then hugged and kissed Becky again.

"You're going home now, darling," she told the filly, hugging her around the neck. "The war's over for you. You're safe now, and can grow up to be a beautiful white horse of the most famous riding school in the world. And when you've become a mare, you can have foals of your own, to carry on your honored line."

Hopefully, she thought, the war will soon be over for us all. Barbara's search for love, which seemed at times like a war, was finally over. Kissing a finger then, she touched it to the Pegasus pinned over her heart on the GI fatigue jacket she was given to wear.

She had thought about it a lot as she and Stephen had walked that morning in the mountains with the foal. She would always treasure the Pegasus, and the memory of who had given it to her. But the time had come to take it off. She would put it away for safe-keeping and, some day, give it to someone else who would need its message.

Paul was right, it does work, she knew, looking out from the back of the truck as Stephen drove up from behind in his jeep and blew a kiss to her.

Blowing her love a kiss back, she wanted to tell it to the whole world...

"Where there is no love,

put love, and you will find love!"
