An Ounce of Prevention
Page 39"Take it off," he barked.
She complied, handing it to him. He tossed it after the phone. The camp couldn't be seen from where they were, but Carmen avoided looking in that direction. If they didn't return, Jonathan would contact the authorities.
With the gun still pointed at Alex, the gunman eyed Carmen with obvious appreciation. "You'd bring a good price," he said, still eyeing her.
Carmen caught her breath. "I'd rather die."
His startled gaze came back to her face and the smile disappeared from his lips. For a moment he studied her, as if trying to decide what her angle was.
When Alex spoke, his voice was quiet. "Leave her alone. I'll go with you."
The man gave him a wry smile. "You're not in any position to negotiate. I've got you both and there's nothing you can do about it."
Alex frowned. "Do you always fight women?"
The man laughed without humor. "You're wife is right. You watch too many movies. Don't try to appeal to my honor. I'm not going to put this gun down and fight you." He eyed Alex critically before continuing. "It wouldn't take long to whip you anyway." His gaze came back to Carmen. He lifted the gun and pointed it at her forehead. "So you'd rather die right here. Maybe that's the best thing. Women are generally more trouble than they're worth."
She looked him in the eye. If he was going to kill her, she'd rather he did it now. She didn't know who he thought would give him a good price for her, but the expression on his face gave her a clue. The idea of being raped in front of Alex gave her determination. The combination of the climb, his choking her and the sudden rush of blood from her head caused flecks of light in her eyes. When he cocked the rifle, she closed her eyes. She didn't want to die, but she wasn't going to beg, either. It wouldn't do any good. She prayed for Alex and the children before her knees buckled and she lost consciousness.
